Biography
Dr. Ali Asghar Maassoumi, Born at Ramsar (Prov. Mazandaran) in 1948, obtained his B.sc. Degree in Biology from University of Tehran, Faculty of Science in 1973. He started his research career with supervising of Prof. P. Wendebo and H. Runemark. In 1977 he obtained his M.sc. and in 1980 he obtained his Ph.D. degree from University of Louis Pasteur, Institut Botanique, Strasbourg, France. In 1982 he continued his research career on the genus Astragalus in Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands, National Botanical Garden of Iran, Tehran. His main interest was taxonomy and phytogeography of the genus Astragalus in Iran.
Dr. Maassoumi, has also worked on different genera such as: Oxytropis, Calligonum, Salix and Rumex. He published his revision works on the genus Astragalus, entitled” The genus Astragalus in Iran” in 5 volumes, Persian language with Latin literature; “Flora of Iran, genus Astragalus” in 3 volumes and “Illustrated guide of the genus Astragalus in Iran” in 3 volumes. He published about 150 papers and described about 130 new species. During his 38 years of investigation, he had more than 140 Botanical excursion to different parts of Iran. He started his collaboration with Prof. Dr. Podlech since 1985 and published several papers and described numerous new species. From 1988-1992 he was director of Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands also from 1995-2010 in two periods, he was director of Plant Taxonomy Division. He retired in 2016 but he continue his scientific works specially on the genus Astragalus.
